Automated Layout Systems
The LifeMark® Automated Layout System is made for people who work on roads performing line striping tasks. It uses advanced machine learning, computer vision, and GPS technology to record where road markings are before a road is repaved. After repaving, the system helps put the markings back in the exact same spots, keeping workers safe and away from traffic.
Here’s how it works:
- Cameras: Mounted on the vehicle to target the road markings.
- GPS System: Uses advanced RTK technology to find the exact locations of the markings.
- Industrial Computer: Calculates the original marking locations.
- Paint Positioning System: Accurately places the paint over the original markings.

System Operation
The LifeMark system is so easy to use – most new operators are performing safe, quality work on the first day. Recording is as simple as driving in the lane of the road, while the LifeMark system uses the cameras mounted on each side of the truck to record the pavement marking locations and passing pattern information. Recordings can be performed at speeds up to 80 mph.
Road and file information can be entered into the system in the office, to ensure accurate file management on the Web page.
The cell phone in the LifeMark system is used to send the processed locations and transition data to the cloud for immediate review of the recordings in the office.
Layout is performed in most cases by the same less-experienced personnel. The Operator simply selects the appropriate desired file on the touchscreen in the truck, starts the carriage control system and spray can or paint or drip layout system, and drives the road while following the on-screen virtual line in the cab. Accurate layout marks are placed. The driver does need to stay in his lane while the system maintains accuracy.
Layout is performed at speeds up to 15 mph, all from the safety of the truck. No boots on the ground. Layout can be performed in live traffic.
Here’s how the LifeMark® system works in simple terms:
Recording the Road Markings:
- The driver starts at the beginning of the road marking.
- While following the road markings, the system tracks their exact location using built-in cameras.
- The system saves the GPS locations of the markings in its memory.
Remarking the Road:
- After the road is repaved, the driver uses the saved GPS data to follow the original marking path shown virtually on a computer screen.
- The computer takes care of controlling the paint equipment, making sure the new markings are in the same exact spots as before.
- Throughout this process, the operator stays safely inside the vehicle. This setup reduces the need for extra layout crews, saves time and money, and keeps workers out of harm’s way.
Data Import/Export
LifeMark Systems can now take in location data generated by other systems. CAD files, Photo GIS, and hand-surveyed GIS data can all be imported into the LifeMark system. Our simple instructions outline steps to export the data from the external software into a LifeMark compatible format. Customers who do not have CAD capabilities can use our approved partner SOLO who can take their request in a variety of forms (plans, sketches, verbal instructions). This option can allow layout files to be generated for new construction, multi-lane traffic switches, etc. Learn More
The LifeMark system can also export pavement marking location and pattern data to be used by other external CAD systems, Database systems, and other layout systems.
Use the LifeMark system to update your passing patterns, as built pavement marking lanes widths, or other lost information.
Platforms
While the LifeMark system is available for most vehicle platforms, our stock system is a Ford F-350 crew cab diesel pickup truck that we order with a PTO to provide safe, reliable, hydraulic power to move the carriages. Contact us today to see if we have a unit in stock for you to buy.
We can also perform custom builds on almost any brand of pickup truck. We can use a gas pony motor to provide hydraulic power. Older existing Dodge, Chevy and Ford trucks are in use across the country.
An electric powered carriage system is also available. This has been used on vans and smaller pickup trucks, as this system weighs less than the hydraulic power system.
New or Existing Pickup
LifeMark®-100 Layout F-350 2WD Pickup Truck
This LifeMark-100 system is a new system installed onto a new Ford F-350 truck that allows for recording and layout. It comes with the LifeMark-100 control box, driver touchscreen, GPS/cellphone antennas and camera system. It includes carriages with smart hydraulics, cylinders, and valves to layout markings. Includes a paint controller system.
LifeMark®-100 Temp/Layout F-350 2WD Pickup Truck
This LifeMark-100 system is a new system installed onto a new Ford F-350 truck that allows for recording, layout and painting of temporary markings. It comes with the LifeMark-100 control box, smart cylinders, driver touchscreen, GPS/cellphone antennas and camera system. It includes hydraulics, two paint tanks, two bead hoppers, two carriages, four paint guns and three bead guns. Includes a paint controller system.
Dual Carriage
LifeMark® Automated Layout System w/ Dual Carriage
The dual carriage system is offered to allow layout from either side of the truck, with the ability to layout a specific lane width. This greatly increases the flexibility to layout jobs in difficult paving situations. The ability for the system to layout a second set of marks in tandem to the recorded mark means:
- Less Time Spent Recording – with only the centerline recorded, the ability now exists to input and layout lane widths.
- Simple Operation – dial in the lane width required and the second carriage will maintain accurate location and lane width regardless of driver experience.
- Record from either side of the truck.
- Layout from either side of the truck, or from both sides simultaneously.
LifeMark®-100 Dual Carriage Recording and Layout System with Dual-Color Airless Spray System
Available on 2 WD Ford F-350 Pickup truck with PTO, this system consists of hardware and software to record pavement marking location via cameras while driving the vehicle at traffic speeds. Data is stored locally and uploaded to the cloud via cellphone for storage and use later to layout existing markings after repaving of the road or runway. This system has cameras on both sides of the vehicle, and includes all GPS, RTK and full carriage movement systems. It can record marking location and place layout marks as guided by GPS using both carriages via a Graco Airless two-color paint system or spray cans. This is a single person operator system. Skill and appropriate experience are required to operate a paint truck, but the automation makes the task easier and safer for the driver. This system includes two bead bins, two 30-gallon paint tanks and it can place full markings.
